Mojito Recipe

There are few better drinks on a hot summer evening than a refreshing mojito. These fun elixirs are simple to make and are sure to be crowd pleasers! These cocktails originated in Cuba where they were referred to as Highballs. The ingredients number only five and could not be simpler: white rum, sugar, lime juice, soda water, and mint. Fresh mint is the absolutely the most important ingredient to get the taste just right, and if must be freshly muddled. Combine 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lime juice, 2 teaspoons of pure cane sugar, one cup of crushed ice if that is your thing, with the mint, rum and club soda to taste. Add a few sprigs of mint as a garnish and enjoy this refreshing thirst quencher. There are variations of course, with some recipes doing without the club soda, or using simple sugar. After a few batches, people channel their inner mixologists and add their own customizing touches.

  1. Is it okay to use bottled lime juice in a mojito?
    Reply

The appeal of a mojito is its refreshing taste, and bottled lime juice is just not the same as fresh squeezed. If no fresh limes are available, it will work in a pinch. Cocktail purists will decry this practice as it will alter the taste of using all fresh ingredients.

  2. Should the lime and mint be muddled together?
    Reply

Only the mint needs to be muddled when making a mojito. The juice of the lime should be squeezed into the drink itself and not combined with the mint. The limes are not added to the drink, only its juice.
