Many homeowners are interested in building a fence to complete the look and security of their homes. A fence is a structure that encloses an area, most often outdoors, and usually constructed from posts that are connected by boards, wire, rails or netting. A fence typically does not have a solid foundation along its whole length. A fence provides safety and security by protecting people and animals. A fence helps to establish boundaries and provides privacy. A fence can conceal unattractive sights, adding value and improving the visual appeal of a house or structure. Be sure to ask the following questions when researching fence installation options.
There are many fence options available to you. Some of them are aluminum, wrought iron or chain link. You could also get a wood or bamboo fence. There are also PVC, vinyl and electric fences. Most homeowners prefer a six foot privacy fence.
Most cost estimators will tell you that the average price to install a fence is $2,388. The average minimum cost to install a six-foot privacy fence, which is preferred among home owners, is $3 per linear foot, with the maximum cost around $13 per linear foot.
A building permit is not required to build a fence if your fence is no taller than three feet at the front of the property or taller than six feet in the back or on the side of the property. If your fence is going to be taller than that, you will need to submit a building permit application.
The voltage being sent through the wires is high, but the current or amplification (amps) is very low. A 220 volt or a 110 volt shock will hurt just as much as a 10,000-volt shock, as long as the current or amps are the same. Electric fences are safe for both pets and humans because it's not truly a shock.
Aluminum fencing is versatile, affordable, and durable. Aluminum fencing requires very little maintenance. However, aluminum fencing costs more than wood upfront. Aluminum does not require much maintenance so it will cost less in the long run. Wood has been a long time favorite. It's attractive and inexpensive. It works well for privacy fences, and you can paint and stain it any color. It does, however, require a lot of maintenance.
The best way to determine how many slats, or pickets, that you need, you need to add the slat spacing to the width of each one. You then divide this number into the total length of the fence to find the number of slats you need. As an example, if you're using 6 inch slat, which is 5 1/2 inches wide, and you're spacing them by 1/2 inch, you need 400 of them for a 200 foot fence.
In most cases, the fence posts should be spaced between six and eight feet apart. You need to set the corner posts first. You need to make sure all of the posts are aligned in between. To do this, stretch a line from each corner post to work as a guide. Then you can and should make the exact position where you want to dig each post hole.
When digging a post hole you should make sure the diameter of the hole is 3 times the width of the post. For example, the hole for a 4 inch wood post should be about 12 inches wide. The depth of the hole should be 1/3-1/2 of the post height above ground. For example, a 6 foot tall fence would require a hole depth of at least 2 feet.
